Prof. Hongsheng Chen Elected 2027 Optica Fellow

Date:2026-10-28

Prof. Hongsheng Chen, Qiushi Distinguished Professor and Dean of the College of Information Science and Electronic Engineering at Zhejiang University, has been elected to the 2027 Class of Optica Fellows, the society announced. He is among 116 scientists from around the world recognized this year.

Optica, formerly the Optical Society (OSA), cited Chen for “significant contributions to metamaterials and AI-enabled invisibility cloak, enabling advanced control of light propagation and scattering”. The Fellowship is the society’s highest honor for members who have made outstanding contributions to optics and photonics through research, education, engineering, and service to the community.

Chen’s work sits at the intersection of metamaterials and artificial intelligence. His research spans novel artificial electromagnetic structures, electromagnetic wave cloaking, topological electromagnetics, electron radiation mechanisms, and deep-learning-enabled intelligent electromagnetic wave manipulation. He has authored or co-authored more than 400 peer-reviewed papers, with publications appearing in Nature, Nature Physics, Nature Photonics, Nature Materials, Nature Nanotechnology, and Physical Review Letters. His work has received over 25,000 citations, and several results have been recognized among China’s representative scientific achievements and top optical research news.

Chen is also a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and a Changjiang Scholar appointed by the Ministry of Education. He received the Second Prize of the 2025 State Natural Science Award and the Fourth “National Innovation Competition Award.” He is a Fellow of IEEE, Optica, AAIA, the Electromagnetics Academy (EMA), and the Chinese Society for Optical Engineering, and currently serves as vice president of the Chinese Society for Metamaterials and a standing council member of the Chinese Society for Optical Engineering.

Optica, founded in 1916, is a leading international society dedicated to the advancement of optics and photonics. Its Fellow program recognizes members whose contributions have shaped the science and application of light. Chen’s election reflects the College’s growing strength in metamaterials, intelligent electromagnetic control, and photonics research at the international frontier.
